Inflammation and microglia/macrophage activation go hand in hand. One of the mechanisms driving these processes is cytokine release. iPSC-derived microglia- and macrophage-like cells can be stimulated to an inflammatory state to release high levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines. This provides a relevant platform for testing compounds that aim to dampen the inflammatory response. Macrophages can also be polarised to distinct phenotypes (pro- and anti-inflammatory), enabling cytokine profile evaluation.
